NORMAN, Okla. -- Coach Bob Stoops sat in the
seats among reporters, TV crews and other members of the sports
media Saturday after Oklahoma's annual spring football game.
Instead of talking behind the microphone, Stoops sat and smiled
and watched Trey Metoyer address the masses. "He's not like a
normal freshman," Stoops said. No kidding.
Metoyer showed that on the field, then again after, as he
entertained questions, fired back answers and at the same time
established himself as the brightest of stars on a windy spring
day as the offense beat the defense, 22-21 in front of 20,509
fans.
Just a freshman, Metoyer, not quarterback Landry Jones, the
return of Mike Stoops as defensive coordinator, or even the
weather, arguably made more of an impact than Metoyer did
Saturday.
He caught six passes for 72 yards, playing with the second team
on offense.
"He's going to have a big article in the paper tomorrow," said
offensive coordinator Josh Heupel. "Hopefully he doesn't read
it."
Well, if he does, he's going to like what he sees. And if the
spring is an indicator, so will everyone else.
"A good receiver goes and gets it," Metoyer said. "I try to do
that all the time. It's learning the game and learning the
defense."
Saturday, Jones played just 12 plays and led the offense to a
field goal on his only possession, leaving the rest of the
quarterbacking to reserves Blake Bell, Drew Allen and Kendal
Thompson. Jones was 4-for-8 for 23 yards.
Bell, who was sensational last season running the ball in
short-yardage situations, was outstanding throwing the ball
Saturday. He was 14-of-19 for 179 yards, including a 60-yard TD
pass to Jaz Reynolds.
Allen was 10-of-18 passing for 72 yards. Thompson finished
7-of-9 for 42 yards and threw the game-winning TD to running
back Danzel Williams with 31 seconds left.
More importantly, the offense didn't have a turnover and showed
big-play ability, highlighted by the 60-yard touchdown pass from
Bell to Reynolds. Reynolds finished with two catches for 64
yards while Trey Franks had six for 54 yards. Williams finished
with four catches.
